Documents Needed for a Foreign Divorce Opinion Letter

Most reviews start with the same core records. If something is missing, ABALAW will tell you what can be used and what may need to be obtained first.

Foreign divorce certificate or decree

The official document showing the divorce was granted and finalized outside Canada.

Original marriage certificate

The certificate for the marriage that the foreign divorce ended.

Government-issued photo ID

Passport, driver licence, permanent resident card, or another accepted identification document.

Date and place details

Where the marriage happened, where the divorce was granted, and when it became final.

Certified translation

Usually required if any divorce document is not in English or French.

Authority request

Any note, email, or letter asking you for a legal opinion or proof of recognition.

Have some, but not all, documents?

Start with what you have. A lawyer can identify what is still required before the opinion is finalized.
